The Grand Jersey is a rather splendid late-Victorian hotel with all the glamour and confidence of the Belle Epoque. There are wonderful views from the terrace, just a stone’s throw from the waters of St Aubin’s Bay, and a deeply indulgent spa. But that’s all a bonus – you’re here for the food. The restaurant, Tassili, is a darkly luxurious space that comes into its own in the evenings. Service is excellent, with a great eye for detail, and you can expect high-level French technique from Nicolas Valmagna and his team, taking inspiration from the island’s produce and ideas from further afield. A starter of Scottish langoustine (a hugely plump, fresh example) with asparagus and morels is a fine spring dish, and perfectly-timed turbot is an equally well-conceived main course, accompanied by saffron risotto, mussels, wonderful sea vegetables and a squid ink crisp. Moving on, a pre-dessert of almond ice and blood orange is a great introduction to dessert proper – Valrhona chocolate pistachio cake with yuzu cremeaux and chocolate sorbet proving a truly brilliant combination of flavours and textures.
