The Royal is a handsome slice of Regency grandeur on the Isle of Wight's southeastern coast. Inside, is a classic English tableau fully loaded with crystal chandeliers, parquet floors and decorative ironwork. The island's own Gallybagger cheese opens proceedings in a soaring soufflé, together with caramelised cauliflower purée, while main course teams poached and roasted chicken breast with crispy wings, baked onion, purée and florets of broccoli and chicken sauce. Fish is always a good bet here, perhaps brill fillet with hand-dived scallops, vanilla purée, foraged sea herbs and pickled raisins, while dessert could be baked almond ricotta cheesecake with rhubarb, and ginger baked Alaska with rhubarb consommé and compôte.
