A hotel since 1869, the Lovat has been run by the Gregory family for the past 12 years and it remains a landmark hotel in the Highlands. Located a brisk uphill walk from the southern end of Loch Ness, the Lovat offers stylish accommodation but it has retained much of the building's Victorian appeal. Whether you choose the brasserie or Station Road Restaurant, you can be sure of some gastronomic fireworks along the way. Chef Sean Kelly is a master of ambitious and innovative cooking, but it's all executed with a degree of playfulness. The hotel's environmentally friendly ethos extends to the kitchen, where food miles and provenance are taken very seriously. With views over the loch, the oak-panelled dining room provides a refined setting for dynamic food delivered via a five-course tasting menu (including a vegetarian version). The menu descriptions are terse and often cryptic but the presentation of each dish is designed to excite and surprise. An amuse-bouche of duck liver, beetroot and muesli might kick things off before a starter of seafood carbonara. A main course of Highland beef might make way for a spirited dessert of garden rhubarb, lemon and toast. A closing 'Kinder Surprise' displays solid technical skills.
