Mackay's is home to the No. 1 Bistro, a gently contemporary restaurant with a relaxed vibe. The kitchen makes good use of quality local ingredients, and there's a definite modernity to the output. Take an attractive starter of pan-fried hand-dived scallops, for example, which arrive in the company of smoked cauliflower purée, haggis bonbon and pickled shallots. Next up, baked Scrabster cod is an altogether more straightforward dish, with the flavoursome fish on creamy mash surrounded by herb and shellfish broth. Dessert brings a light iced passionfruit parfait with chocolate crumb and coconut and lime cream. There's a buzzy bar for real ales, cocktails and a terrific range of whiskies.
