Pretty gables and wee turrets give this former ancestral seat of Clan MacKenzie a bit of gravitas, while its lush lawn sweeps down towards the Cromarty Firth. The house is decorated to suit the grand baronial setting, and the traditional and smart Alexander Restaurant matches the mood. The kitchen shows a sense of place in its output, with fine Scottish ingredients peppering the menu. Begin with Moray pork prepared in a modern style (crispy rib and pulled pork). Move on to slow-roasted rump of hogget with home-made haggis, or grilled sole with corn chowder and capers. Finish with a contemporary take on rhubarb and custard.
