Still a proper pub complete with a pool table, well-kept real ales, oak beams, flagstones and a blazing fire, this is an inviting spot with a friendly atmosphere and accomplished cooking. Tomato and basil vinaigrette is a vibrant foil to prawn and crab ravioli, while main-course duck breast is supported by a golden potato cake layered with pork fat and black pudding. Otherwise, you might take refuge in the robust comforts of fillet steak with rolled beef shin and suet pudding, creamed potato, kale and crispy bone marrow, and end with fig cake with a brandy snap and vanilla ice cream.
