Bringing a touch of boutique style to Southampton, this place has a satisfying blend of period details and contemporary touches in the dining room, and an easy-going attitude. The kitchen produces some strident modern stuff such as starters of blow-torched smoked salmon with cucumber pickle and crumbed quail's egg, or seared scallops with cauliflower textures and black pudding. Among main courses, cod loin comes with a chestnut crust alongside artichoke purée and dauphinoise potatoes, and Wiltshire partridge with the leg meat in an accompanying raviolo, plus parsnip purée and sticky red cabbage. Finish with Bakewell tart with clotted cream ice cream and drunken cranberries.
