In a tiny hamlet within the pretty Candover Valley, this Grade I listed flint-and-brick inn has retained its traditional country pub feel with open fires, flagstoned floors and real ales, although these days the emphasis is on food. A combination of traditional British pub dishes and European influences makes for an appealing menu that might kick off with cod and chorizo kebabs with tomato salsa and aïoli. Slow-cooked lamb, spiced chickpeas and mint yogurt looks to the Middle East for inspiration, with Pimm's jelly and vanilla cream making a summery finale. The pub also has an outdoor kitchen which comes into its own on the Sunday 'pizza night'.
