The picture-postcard 17th-century thatched inn deep in the New Forest is a delight in summer, festooned with flowers, and cosy in winter as blazing log fires warm the low beamed bar and dining areas. The welcoming scene draws foodies and forest visitors for its charm and character, glorious sun-drenched garden, and an eclectic mix of pub classics and adventurous modern British dishes. The seasonal menu kicks off with snails and garlic butter with oxtail jus and bread for dipping, and might follow with fried halibut and gnocchi, garnished with cep purée, salted lemon and hazelnuts. To finish, orange and almond tart comes with brown butter ice cream.
