A stolid-looking red-brick country inn where close-set tables add to the dining-room buzz. Rustic cooking with more than a soupçon of French influence proves abidingly popular, seen here in the form of fried chicken livers on sourdough toast with charred sweetcorn in peppercorn sauce to start. Then come mains like accurately timed baked cod in a bouillabaisse of Portland shellfish with saffron gnocchi, fennel, samphire and aïoli that some may judge falls short of its garlicky duty, or venison loin with wild mushrooms, lentils and spiced bread purée. The modernist trail is then followed for desserts such as white chocolate pannacotta with raspberry sorbet and chocolate doughnuts in passionfruit coulis.
