Tylney Hall is the place for classical country-house dining, and the Oak Room Restaurant delivers the goods in a setting involving oak panels, a domed ceiling and a tinkling grand piano. What arrives on the plate is a gently updated take on the classics, with splashes of modernity here and there. A seared fillet of sea bream is accompanied by fennel in coriander and ginger for a southeast Asian flourish, prior to venison loin with potato and pumpkin gratin and confit root veg in a sparse but intense port reduction. Chocolate orange tart, its opulent filling offset by flaky pastry, orange purée and mascarpone ice cream, brings down the curtain.
