Named after the blue-blooded family who live across the river on the Beaulieu estate, The Montagu Arms sits in a prime New Forest spot. It’s the quintessential wisteria-draped, 17th-century country hotel, and the sumptuous comforts within – including a spa and some seriously accomplished food courtesy of Matthew Tomkinson – do not disappoint. With its oak panels, linen-swathed tables and French windows opening onto a delicious garden, the Terrace Restaurant sets a suitably elegant tone for contemporary cooking shot through with uncommon culinary flair. Menus showcase fine ingredients from the New Forest, the south coast and the organic kitchen garden, opening with home-made black pudding with scallops, squid, crispy octopus and romesco sauce, then moving on to a main course of honey-roasted free-range duck breast, its richness balanced by the bitter note of caramelised endive tarte fine, celeriac purée, charred orange and lightly peppered sauce, or perhaps cod escalope with smoked chorizo, coco beans, salt-baked celeriac and lovage. To finish, there’s a luscious combo of dark chocolate crémeux with stout ice cream, chocolate sable biscuit and blackcurrant sauce.
