Alresford - famous for its watercress, steam railway and clear-running chalk streams - has rather improbably added a sunny slice of the Med to its quintessentially English appeal with the arrival of Pulpo Negro. There's a smart-casual, modern feel-good vibe about the place, with its floorboards, café-style chairs, pews and wooden tables. The appealing tapas menu features succulent, full-flavoured secretto (shoulder) Ibèrica, slow-cooked Ibèricus tomatoes bursting with sweetness, spicy Alejandro chorizo teamed with local watercress, and individual piquillo pepper tortilla. The finish, go for crèma Catalana or Spanish cheeses, while well-selected Spanish wines (alongside a good showing of sherry and gin) send all home happy.
