Wrought from a pair of joined-up Georgian townhouses overlooking the Thames by Richmond Bridge, the Bingham delivers the chic boutique bolthole experience in spades. An ambience of calm and civility reigns in the mirrored and chandeliered dining room, which has a look taken straight out of a glossy interior design magazine. Thankfully, it’s not a case of style over substance when it comes to the culinary output, which relies on top-drawer materials for its effect, handling it all with respect and restraint to deliver well-conceived modern British creations full of sharply-defined flavours and textures. Things start with a fragrant black truffle risotto matched inventively with pickled celery and shimeji mushrooms in white balsamic. Main-course neck and loin of lamb comes in a well-judged and harmonious composition involving wild garlic, Puy lentils and sprouting broccoli, or if you’re in the mood for fish, there might be a fresh and vibrant juxtaposition of halibut with tempura oyster, clams and sea vegetables. After that, a zippy lemon tart with pomegranate and white chocolate sorbet illustrates why less is often more. There’s excellent value to be had from the Market menu, built around mains such as pork shoulder with black pudding, parsnip and glazed apple.
