Perched alongside the River Severn, in the Over district on the outskirts of Gloucester, The Wharf House is owned and run by the Canal Trust, and makes a soothing location for seasonal dining. Its restaurant is kitted out with chunky light wood furniture and white walls, and the cooking offers simple, well-balanced dishes with good contrasts of flavour and texture. Expect beautifully tender beef carpaccio dressed in truffle oil, lemon mustard and shaved parmesan, ahead of roast pork tenderloin stuffed with bacon, orange and ginger in red wine and rosemary jus. The signature dessert is moist squares of honey cake with Drambuie ice cream and caramelised almond crumb.
