Built of Cotswold stone early in the 19th-century, this imposing, ivy-clad manor house overlooks Golden Valley and the River Frome. Its Georgian-style interior incorporates an oak-panelled lounge and a dining room with comfortable, high-backed chairs, large windows revealing a beautiful three-acre garden, and decorated with scenes of the house's history. The modern British and European menu might suggest starting with sautéed Cornish scallops and garden pea purée, smoked bacon and shallot dressing, then cep-marinated tenderloin of Gatcombe Estate pork (they're the Princess Royal's pigs) with braised red cabbage, swede purée and apple and cider jus. And, for dessert, iced apricot parfait, apricot confit and crushed almonds.
