This Georgian hotel set within walled gardens with a restaurant to one side is well worth the short drive out from Bristol. Gardens with an ornamental lily pond are a pleasant drinking spot, and inside the place is done in calming pastel shades. Carriages, the dining room, offers a light lemon and cream backdrop to the modernised British and European dishes. A filo pastry tart of mushroom, fennel and red onion with goats' cheese dressing is the summer-season curtain-raiser to roast rack of lamb with Madeira jus, fondant potato and a salad of fennel, orange and watercress. Finish with champagne and elderflower pannacotta and fresh raspberries.
