This landmark restaurant, launched in 1990, continues to draw the crowds with its inventive, flavour-packed Indian food. Spread over three floors, Mother India avoids cliché in its decor with prints of the city on the walls, panelling in the first-floor room and an atmospheric cellar. The menu takes a step away from curry-house standards to deliver broadly appealing dishes. Start with haddock pakoras - pieces of deep-fried fish marinated in ginger and chilli - served with spicy mixed beans, and follow with fall-apart lamb karahi in a rich pepper sauce. Desserts don't let the side down either: gulab jamon, perhaps, with vanilla ice cream.
