Dating from the early 16th century, when it was built by a courtier of Catherine of Aragon, the manor is a perfect example of a half-timbered building, the restaurant an impressive room with a profusion of wall and ceiling timbers and carved stanchions. Classy ingredients are carefully handled and combined sympathetically to create some stimulating dishes. Start with a pairing of Orkney scallops and marinated salmon with nori and crème fraîche, before proceeding to the likes of venison with parsnips, girolles, pomegranate and blackberries. Vegetarians have a separate menu, and desserts include hazelnut praline crémeux with cocoa sponge and caramelised almond ice cream.
