With its blackboard menu in the gravel outside, this restaurant with full-on royal connections is an oasis of pastoral calm in the bustling city. Cosy up in wicker chairs at big communal tables for Scottish cooking that takes pride in its carefully sourced prime materials. That's clear from a starter of mutton and roe-deer meatballs in maltagliati pasta bound in rich creamy sauce with chopped nuts, and from a seafaring main course of turbot with winkles, strongly cured smoked bacon, apple and celeriac and a smoked yogurt dressing. Moist, substantial hazelnut cake comes with poached rhubarb and light sherry ice cream.
