A godsend for the neighbourhood, this cheery venue combines a laid-back demeanour with clean-cut, contemporary looks, breezy service, and a kitchen that produces unfussy, full-flavoured dishes with European leanings. Pheasant, grouse and mallard all have their say in a robust game terrine served with apple and kohlrabi remoulade and pickled raisins, followed by slow-cooked short rib of beef partnered with dauphinoise potatoes, roasted carrots and mushroom ketchup. Fishy ideas might include stone bass with sea kale, lemon gnocchi and beurre blanc. For afters, there’s warm chocolate mousse with chocolate orange ice cream, basil meringue and honeycomb. If you’re after top value, the lunch menu is a steal.
