The white-faced Curlew is perched on what was the old coaching-route from Hastings to London. A relaxed countrified atmosphere prevails, with a roaring log-burner and a fresh, open look to the decor. Mackerel comes both scorched and in céviche, rootily dressed with beet and horseradish, while duck liver and foie gras parfait has both gingerbread and salted pineapple for sweet and savoury company. They could be followed by pinkish pine-smoked venison with spiced red cabbage, blackberries, and light clumps of sesame-scented granola, or a double act of cinnamon and anise chicken with monkfish. Clementine mousse with spiced fruit cake and egg nog is the truly thought-provoking way to finish.
