Crossways' appeal lies in the standard of the cooking and in the interesting monthly-changing four-course menu. Mango salsa is a good foil for duck terrine wrapped in pancetta, or start with a seafood pancake. Soup normally follows before the main course, where a straightforward approach brings out the flavours of quality ingredients: perhaps five lamb cutlets, roasted to pink, with a copybook version of port, redcurrant and rosemary sauce and seasonal vegetables, or, in season, roast breast of local pheasant with a shallot, bacon and chestnut sauce. There's always a fish dish of the day, and puddings include Swiss roll with raspberries and cream.
