Ancient timber beams and exposed stonework attest to Le Petit Canard’s origins as a former coaching inn, with linen-clothed tables topped with flowers and candles adding to its homely appeal. Gerry and Cathy Craig have run the place with amicable charm for 18 years, and Gerry's precise, generous cooking hits all the right accents without trying to reinvent the wheel. Seared scallops with celeriac purée and crispy pancetta is a typical starter, while main-course loin of local wild venison comes with a deeply flavoured red wine and redcurrant sauce. For dessert, go for something like dark chocolate and Amaretto mousse torte.
