Positioned on a rising side-street just off the Torquay marina, Simon Hulstone's destination venue has kept the Devon resort firmly on the gastronomic map of the south-west for over a decade now. It's a daylight-filled, split-level space that takes on a softly lit intimate ambience in the evenings, when an infectious buzz hovers over the amply proportioned tables. The produce of The Elephant's own farm makes its way into virtually every dish on the menu, from a slow-cooked bantam egg in sweet onion consommé with gruyère and lemon thyme, to mains such as cod fillet with parsnip purée and lardo Ibérico in spring onion butter, or the succulent roast Southdown lamb with Savoy cabbage, Roscoff onion and black garlic. Medlar jelly and green tomato chutney then provide the sweet and sour notes to a plate of artisan south-west cheeses, for those not intent on going full-spectrum indulgence with bitter chocolate fondant tart, brown butter ice cream and malt cookie crumbs. Loose-leaf teas make a refreshing alternative to yet another espresso: they include lemon and ginger, and South Africa's organic rooibos tea.
