Smack on the seafront overlooking the shingle beach, with stunning views across Start Bay, The Cricket enjoys an unrivalled location and retains every ounce of its identity as a former fisherman's pub. Blackboard menus advertise what has been freshly drawn from the bay, backed up by stalwarts such as scallops and chorizo on saffron risotto, and whole lobsters done thermidor. A bowl of creamy crab soup is smooth and satisfying, and the unimpeachable freshness of the shellfish is celebrated in simple mains such as king prawn linguine with confit tomatoes, fennel, chilli, garlic and ginger. Baked Alaska is all the rage right now, and comes with orange meringue and mango.
