Sustaining modern dishes in a Tudor riverside inn

Wines by the glass

Set in nine acres of grounds that slope gently to the River Derwent, the stone-built 16th-century Plough is welcoming and friendly. The courtyard's the place to be in summer, and the dining room is always smartly turned out. The same might be said of the cooking. A starter might be seared foie gras on toast with home-made sweet pickle, and you could follow that with poached fillet of beef with fondant potato, butternut squash purée, buttered kale, and a horseradish and ginger cream. Vegetarians might opt for orzo with white beans, confit fennel, courgettes and goats' cheese.
