Refurbishment has transformed this white two-storey inn into the eye-catching combination of bar and restaurant with rooms it is today. The menu neatly encapsulates both pub elements and more refined offerings. Ale-battered cod and chips, lamb hotpot and chargrilled steaks are all possibilities, alongside tender pink slices of loin of venison on rösti with a copper pot of game casserole, red wine jus and seasonal vegetables, or roast monkfish tail in Thai-style broth with jasmine rice. Topping and tailing these are light-textured cheese soufflé with a refreshing herb salad, and burnt Cambridge cream (a precursor of crème brûlée) with berry compôte and amaretti biscuit.
