A traditional looking inn in a stunning location with views over the Cumbrian Fells, yet close to the M6, Stoneybeck has been much extended to include accommodation as well as wedding and conference facilities. It's opened up and contemporary on the inside, and well-turned-out staff do a good job of looking after proceedings. The kitchen turns out updated versions of classic dishes, so roast loin of Cumbrian lamb comes with mini shepherd's pie and lettuce sauce, or stick with beer-battered fish and chips. Local wood pigeon stars in a first course with smoked black pudding crumb, while, for dessert, 'Anyone for Pimm's' is a bit of modern summer fun.
