With Simon Rogan's name above the door and the flagship L'Enclume just up the road, you expect good things at this clean-lined, rustic-chic restaurant in a Lakeland stone house with Cartmel Priory an impressive backdrop and a cracking riverside location. Rogan is not at the stoves of course, but the food bears his stamp, albeit in a more stripped-back and accessible style, and the same supremely good produce lies at the heart of everything (much of it sourced from his farm down the valley). It is dynamic, contemporary stuff, starting with a deeply muttony croquette of lamb belly pointed up with piquant capers, cornichons and shallots and partnered with creamed potato, caramelised onion and watercress - a case of simplicity done with style. More big, bold flavours arrive at main course stage: hake fillet is butter-poached, then roasted and served with confit potatoes, wild garlic oil, silky celeriac purée, crispy chicken skin and hazelnut. Meatier appetites could try Cumbrian rib steak with truffle pudding, purple potato latkas, shallots and parsley. Desserts are no less enticing judging by the caramel tart, which arrives with candied lemon and mascarpone ice cream, or there could be a comforting baked rice pudding with blackberries, pear and almond.
