Enjoying a new lease of life since the team behind The Punchbowl Inn in Crosthwaite carried out a major makeover, the Plough sports a clean-lined contemporary look without sacrificing the best of its pubby character. It's a classy act with tasteful colours, leather sofas, and a Brathay slate-topped bar set against the cosiness of wooden floors, beams, real fires and the like. Home-made pork pies are a speciality here, served with piccalilli and salad, and you can follow that with two-day braised beef brisket with parsley mash, Savoy cabbage, crispy bone marrow and proper gravy. For dessert, vanilla pannacotta comes with damson compôte and Jammy Dodger shortbread.
