Standing in 400 acres of grounds bordering Bassenthwaite, Armathwaite Hall has rich fabrics and acres of oak panelling, as well as all the present-day amenities. The Lake View Restaurant is a lovely high-ceilinged room in rich golds and reds with comfortable chairs at formally-laid tables. The kitchen steers a course to keep traditionalists and modernists happy, sending out starters like marinated Shetland scallops with ham hock, avocado and ginger. Main course might be loin and braised shoulder of Cartmel venison with poached pear and parsleyed bulgar wheat, while the signature dessert is apple and cinnamon spring roll with yogurt sorbet and figs.
