Confident, creative cooking in a converted village inn

The Oak Tree is just the sort of unassuming village inn you'd like to come across when touring the Pennines. Main courses are clearly focused: top-class Scarborough cod is partnered with steamed Shetland mussels, parsnip purée and a hit of curry flavour, while best end of lamb might be supported by giant couscous, merguez sausage and cumin. Elsewhere, dishes are interesting without being overloaded with flavours, as seen in a warm salad of smoked duck and black pudding with a well-balanced honey and mustard dressing. Expect excellent home-baked breads, and the ice creams to accompany desserts, such as the salted caramel that comes with hot chocolate fondant, are also made on the premises.
