The house that became the Greenbank Hotel has occupied this spot since 1640, and in 2015 its restaurant received a top-to-toe facelift. A new head chef delivers a please-all roster of classics (fish and chips, burgers and steaks) and modern European dishes with Cornish produce as a starting point. Uncluttered starters include potted ham hock with home-made piccalilli, followed by fish from local day boats - pan-roasted hake fillet, say, with crab and chorizo risotto, samphire and pomegranate. If the mood calls for meat, braised beef cheeks come with celeriac dauphinoise, cauliflower and red wine sauce. Desserts include sticky toffee pudding with white chocolate fudge, toffee sauce and clotted cream.
