Dating from 1830, The Alverton is an impressive granite building designed by the same chap who gave us nearby Truro Cathedral. Food and drink is a major part of the appeal, whether it's lunch, afternoon tea or an evening meal. There is plenty of period charm and a contemporary sheen to the smart, upmarket brasserie. The menu takes a modern European path with a good representation of Cornish ingredients. Start with pigeon, textures of beetroot, sautéed cabbage and charred pear before moving on to venison fillet, parsnip purée, celeriac and juniper jus. Finish with pear arlette and crème fraîche sorbet.
