The stone-built manor house has stood in its six acres of wooded gardens near Falmouth since 1872. The atmosphere is white-linened gentility, the culinary style is modern brasserie, with well turned-out dishes making an impact on both eye and palate. Chicken liver parfait comes with puréed cauliflower and red onion marmalade, an alternative to chargrilled mackerel and orange in horseradish cream. Mains bring on accurately seared brill with tiger prawns and garlic mash in celeriac velouté, or lamb rump with sweet potato dauphinoise in port and redcurrants. Lemon mousse in citrus syrup is a lively finish, or try white chocolate and banana parfait in butterscotch sauce.
