Mannings is a classic-looking solid-stone building – Grade II listed no less – but within it is all slick modernity and contemporary attitude. The restaurant has its own entrance (and a cocktail bar), and an interior design spec that includes moody black-and-white photos, stainless steel, and trendy light fittings. The food matches the up-to-date setting with a globally-inspired menu that includes local steaks cooked on the grill alongside various curries and Japanese-style bento boxes. Kick off with a modern British classic such as scallops with black pudding and cauliflower croquette, before lamb’s liver with bubble-and-squeak, chilli beef burrito, or seafood salad. To finish, crème brûlée might be flavoured with passionfruit.
