Built in the 1890s for an industrialist, the partly timbered house became a favourite bolt-hole for Sir Edward Elgar. A hotel since the 20s, it has been carefully restored to offer the full country-house package, complete with conservatory dining-room views of a riverside teeming with wildlife (do look out for the otters). Begin with sardines with a hollandaise sauce and tomato brioche, or cockles and mussels in a creamy leek sauce, and move on to confit duck leg with dauphinoise potatoes and an orange and Cointreau sauce. To finish, pecan tart arrives in the company of rum and raisin ice cream, while the cheese selection is a slate of Welsh options.
