Built in the Victorian era by the Earl of Crewe, the Yew Tree was fitted out with weathered beams and open fireplaces, and that lived-in look is the key to its present restoration. Patchwork upholstery and tiled floors make an engaging backdrop for unpretentious modern pub food that lives up to the surroundings. Smoked mackerel pâté with beetroot jam and crostini makes a bracing start, the prelude to pork Wellington with sage and chestnut stuffing in creamy cider sauce, a richly fortifying main dish. Desserts pull out the stops for the likes of salt caramel pannacotta with gingerbread and crumbled fudge, garnished ingeniously with a caramel-filled twirl of meringue.
