With seven acres of beautiful gardens, Mere Court Hotel has bags of appeal. Dating from the turn of the 20th century, this imposing Arts and Crafts house has plenty of period swagger. The oak-panelled Arboretum Restaurant is an elegant spot with lake views, and is the setting for upbeat European-inspired cooking. Fried duck egg with smoked goats' cheese, thyme and potato rösti and beetroot purée is one way to start, while main courses might include fillet of sea trout, mascarpone and mint spelt with shallot purée. Finish with chocolate and Cointreau orange mousse, orange jelly and chocolate soil.
