This 16th-century coaching inn on the River Nene matches the period charm of days gone by with the usual modern touches, including a rather nifty dining option in a cosy room. The kitchen is not averse to the occasional contemporary touch and modern cooking technique, so carpaccio of venison might come with a horseradish pannacotta and parmesan wafer, and a main course fillet of beef is served with an oxtail barley risotto and merlot reduction. There's evident ambition on show, although not everything reaches the same heights. For dessert, chocolate and pear brûlée is served with a brandy snap biscuit.
