Every inch the classic thatched village inn, the Pheasant flaunts its centuries-old pedigree, with simple furniture, welcoming open fires and oak beams. For over 50 years the place has been known for fine food - way before anyone added the gastro prefix to pub - and continues to deal in European-influenced cooking that's full of fresh ideas. Pan-fried sweetbreads open proceedings, supported by glazed apple, crispy potato, asparagus, pancetta and sage, while main-course sea bass is enriched with shellfish butter, creamed spinach and samphire. Finish with elderflower pannacotta, served with apricot sorbet and brandy snap. A standout wine list promises choice pickings.
