The Rosette award for this establishment has been suspended due to a change of chef. Reassessment will take place in due course under the new chef. The elegantly formal Riverside Restaurant serves up a magnificent view of the Thames, Marlow bridge and the church opposite from its conservatory dining room, while the service team, slick and professional, ensure there's nothing to detract from the occasion, be it a summer lunch or wintertime dinner. Tables on the outdoor terrace are a treat in warm weather, with candles adding to the special atmosphere in the evening. The kitchen's output draws on contemporary ideas without pushing the envelope too much, and high quality seasonal ingredients are the bedrock of the menu. 'Small plates' might include an impressive ham hock and foie gras terrine, with pea mousse and raisin purée, and scorched fillet of mackerel partnered with potato salad, truffle mayo and apple caramel. Among 'large plates', breast of duck is served with cider raisins and quince, sea trout keeps company with brown butter jus, and marinated rump steak comes with wild mushroom gratin and classic dauphinoise. To finish, brioche treacle slice is an indulgent treat, served with blackcurrant clotted cream ice cream, or go for a straight-up crème brûlée. Fit in some cheese from the passing trolley if you've room. The attention to detail extends to excellent home-made breads and creative amuse-bouche.
