Assured cooking in village pub with a cricketing theme

The Jolly Cricketers ticks all the boxes with its cosy, low-ceilinged bar, cricket-themed pictures, congenial atmosphere (four-legged friends are welcome too), range of real ales and a sensibly concise menu of crowd-pleasing modern dishes. Devilled Cornish crab with melba toast gets things off to a flying start, or you might go for rabbit and ham terrine with carrot and vanilla purée. A main course of Cornish hake baked with a lemon and parsley crust and served with potato gnocchi, chorizo and cucumber hits all the right notes, or perhaps pot-roasted rump of beef with carrots, pancetta and creamed potatoes. End with vanilla pannacotta with poached champagne rhubarb and rhubarb sorbet.
