A former 17th-century coaching inn, there's no denying that the Chequers has moved with the times. The Anglo-French cooking in its newly extended chic restaurant delivers compelling flavour combinations. A starter of cured mackerel, for example, is partnered with horseradish pannacotta and apple, radish and orange vinaigrette. A main course dish of lamb - saddle and crispy belly - arrives with pea relish, goats' cheese mash and mint jus, while a fishy main might be plaice with chargrilled baby gem, ricotta gnocchi, pickled black grapes and curry cream sauce. Desserts are no less creative: try blueberry cheesecake with confit lemon and crème fraîche sorbet.
