A lick of Farrow & Ball paint and some bold artworks have created an appealing contemporary space, but it's still a warm and comfortable setting, even with a bit of glamour about it. The kitchen's populist brasserie-style menu offers broad appeal in the shape of burgers, pizza, steak and ale pie, and 21-day aged Cumbrian steaks served on a wooden board with a host of accompaniments. Start with a deliciously rich chicken liver parfait with apple and cider chutney, or calamari in tempura batter, and finish with sticky toffee pudding or a slate of British cheeses.
