A short canter from Newbury Racecourse, this convivial village inn takes its name from locals from the nearby brickworks who used to 'bunk off' work early for a crafty pint. Still very much the village hub where locals prop up the bar by the open fire with a glass of ale and a packet of crisps, its confident modern cooking also attracts foodies. Start with crispy squid, pressed octopus, chorizo, sweetcorn and paprika and basil jus before moving on to smoked chicken schnitzel, fried duck egg, black pudding, treacle-cured bacon, braised gem and caper and lemon dressing.
