The imposing white Georgian mansion house has 240 acres of Berkshire to itself, and is only a stroll from the Great Park at Windsor. Among the attractions at Coworth is a polo field, where you can book lessons if you're a newbie. After's a solid day's battling at the hoops, you'll find Coworth has a fistful of different dining options, leading up to the majestic restaurant, where the organically themed decor includes oak leaves and acorns in plaster relief and an enormous copper ceiling sculpture. The menus are in the youthfully capable hands of Adam Smith, a former Roux scholar with an distinctly classical turn of mind and wondrous technical ability. An opening dish of sautéed duck liver with peach, almonds and ginger demonstrates confident handling of combinations, and mains might take in braised turbot with asparagus and morels in Jura wine, truffled blackleg chicken with celery and mushrooms, or a bravura serving of spring lamb with its sweetbreads, artichoke and aubergine in a deeply savoury jus. Dessert could be almond mousse with caramelised Granny Smith, caramel custard, raisins, vanilla ice cream and a strong Calvados sauce, or traditional lemon tart with meringue garnish and a bewitching note of mint.
