Littlecote has history: there's the remains of a Roman settlement in the grounds, and Cromwell's soldiers were billeted here in the Civil War. In its top restaurant, Oliver's Bistro, we fast-forward to the 21st century: the kitchen turns out resolutely up-to-date, creative ideas that showcase local suppliers, all supported by a globetrotting wine list. Confit duck terrine looks pretty as a picture on a black slate, together with fig sorbet and cubes of brioche, while main-course confit pork belly comes with fondant potato, cauliflower purée, pancetta and Granny Smith apple. For pudding, try a simple but highly effective pairing of chocolate fondant with peanut ice cream and brittle.
