Stephen Toman and Alain Kerloc’h met while working in Paris restaurants and combined their talents (the former as chef, the latter as manager and sommelier) to open OX by the River Lagan. The simple, minimalist interior may be a little disarming for some, but this is the new order, where a lack of fuss and frills does not mean a lack of quality. The service is informed and charming, the cooking is out of this world. Fabulous Irish produce from land and sea star alongside local fruits and veg, so it goes without saying that this is a seasonal journey. Superb sourdough gets the ball rolling before scallops with a luscious bisque, salsify and squid ink, followed by salt-cured halibut with buttermilk and almonds. Presentation is somehow simple yet stunning. Baked celeriac stands centre stage with chanterelles and crapaudine beetroots, while a game offering could be wild Wicklow venison with bone marrow and chestnuts. Among sweet courses, rhubarb keeps company with thyme, honey and crème fraîche parfait. An Irish drinks list includes beers, whiskies and gins, while wine list has enticing options by the glass and carafe.
